SecretTweet

I noticed that, although rarely, there are some replies submitted to very early tweets. There needed to be some way to quickly view the most recent feedback submitted to the site. The replies section was added to fill that void. This has been added to the side menu on the main site (not this blog) and the unabridged version (which has become VERY, VERY popular) has also been added to the same menu.

Because some people are still asking that all tweets, regardless of their content, be published, I’ve decided to show EVERYTHING that is and has been submitted for your viewing pleasure…or displeasure.

Allow me to explain why I started censoring in the first place:

My thoughts were the same as hers. I was getting bored with the same ole stuff over and over. I knew the readers were, too. So, the only way to fix the problem was to start censoring certain tweets that had the same content as several other tweets. We know people are heartbroken…if you have the same feelings, COMMENT and empathize on those existing tweets!

- I have been weeding through the submitted tweets a little more carefully than I used to…the “I love you so much” stuff gets redundant after a while. So if your tweet doesn’t get posted, it probably looks like 100 other tweets that have already been posted. Sorry – gotta keep this new and entertaining or else we’re all just wasting out time here (might be harsh but it’s honest)
- I was on vacation for a while and that created a delay in the approval/posting of the featured links. I’m back now with one hell of a tan…just letting you guys know lol

UPDATED: I have decided to change the time between tweets to 10 minutes. This decision came from the comments. @b52 suggested 30 minutes and several others said there was no problem to begin with. So 10 minutes sounds like a happy medium to me. Don’t like this decision? Comment. Previously when tweets are approved, they went out in spurts (if 15 tweets were waiting on me to approve, 15 tweets went out at the same time and flooded your twitter account).

BUT NOW, if I approve 15 tweets, they will be released in increments of 25 minutes (I might shrink that – do you guys think 20 minutes is too long, too short, or just right???). It’s not my intention to flood your accounts…it’s just the way it was happening. So hopefully my new upgrade will fix this problem (and the time can be adjusted very easily so please let me know if 20 minutes is good enough)… Do note, however, that the only real way to test for errors is to actually put the code out there in the working atmosphere and see what happens. So if something acts up, let me know so I can fix it (things SHOULD be okay, though).

What’s new with the tags/tagcloud:
- All tags with commas in them were stripped of their commas.
- You can no longer input commas in the tag field (well, you can but they’re automatically removed).
- Some tags that mysteriously were cut off (eg: relatio for reltionship) have been fixed and merged into the full tags)
- The tagcloud in the right column is now limited to 25 tags. There is a link below the tagcloud to the full list of tags (or just view it here).
- Because the tagcloud is English only, Spanish tweets will now longer have tags inserted into the cloud (should’ve been done a long time ago but I just didn’t think about it).
- The tagcloud was only showing tags from the first 200-300 tweets submitted. It should now include the tags (top 25) for all 800+ tweets.

What else changed?
- The content ads were removed. Just annoying. I’m sorry I ever put them on here.

What I’d like to remind you of:
- Replies via twitter must follow this exact format or my script won’t pick it up from the twitter feed:

Please note the tilde (~) and tweet number (found at the beginning of every tweet.
- You can reply anonymously by clicking on the tweet title (eg: “secret #—") on secrettweet.com. You can also find deeper explanations on how to reply there (although I don’t see why you would need a deeper explanation).

I think a lot of people are confused as to how SecretTweet works on the backend (most users have no problem understanding that facts that it’s anonymous and posts to twitter, though).

So here’s what happens:
1-User submits secret via secrettweet.com form.
2-I or my Spanish translator friend/guy receive an email that looks something like this:

3-Obviously, I, or my Spanish helper, click the “Approve” link to allow SecretTweet to them post the tweet to the twitter API and update it’s status in the secrettweet.com database to approved (I use the terminology safe–this might answer your question as to what does safe mean from this previous screenshot of the actual database)
4-If I don’t click approve, the tweet is still stored in the database but is never set for public viewing.

So if you’re wondering why your curious tweet of “Is this thing woking??!?!?!” or your silly tweet of “Fuck yo couch!” never saw the light of day (of the pages of twitter/secrettweet), this is why. My approval system keeps the junk out (most of it..but that’s a different post).

If you ever submit something that you feel should have been approved but wasn’t after a day or so, feel free to submit it again. I’ll get the hint that you feel it is important and I’ll approve it. Everyone deserves to share something and I respect that (this might also answer your question, “Well why do I still see things that aren’t techinically secrets coming through secrettweet?")

EDIT: One more thing I forgot to mention: Sometimes people submit secrets when twitter is down/having problems. Until recently, my approval system included no way of telling whether or not a tweet was succesful in posting to twitter. So if twitter was down when I clicked approve, it was never posted to twitter (but was posted on secrettweet.com)….so sorry to those whose secrettweets were lost in the shuffle of things.

Instead of posting new features, updates, bug fixes, etc. to the SecretTweet account (and trying to cram it all under 140 characters), I decided it was time for a SecretTweet blog. Woot!

On to the new feature: Anonymous Commenting and Stats Display
(I got a new minitablet today and wanted an excuse to tinker with it so I took some screenshots to point out the new stuff)

How to comment on/reply to an existing tweet
Why? Because I’ve been receiving (and denying) tons of replies that are submitted as secrets. So to keep things private and to still allow you to comment/reply, the following was added (my handwriting isn’t that bad–the new tablet is a lot different from my other one and I’m not yet used to it haha)

Stats…sort of…
On the index (www.SecretTweet.com), you can now find, under every tweet, the number of replies that specific tweet has.

and on every specific tweet’s page, you can see how many views that tweet has.

This should be working perfectly now but I do tend to make a few mistakes when I’m in a hurry so if something goes wrong, send me a direct message ("d mozunk message here") or email mozunk at gmail dot com. Thanks for following @SecretTweet!
